My friend Carie, like many others, has a little thing for Facebook. I created a page a few years ago, but it was more just to have one set up. It's outdated and terribly boring. Recently, Facebook has exploded and it seems like people are crawling out of the walls, sewers, and dropping down by parachute to join in. There are all of these THINGS..."flair" and "gifts". Every time I sign on, I see messages like, "Jen is in a cat fight and threw a cat at you", or "Dave sent you a wrapped piece of gum. Click here to open it." It's like waking up on some remote island and having no idea what anyone is saying to you.
What?! Sarah AND Carie sent me Grateful Dead Bears?! Is that good? Are they free? Is there a tracking number? Should I be watching for these in the mail? Should I send a thank you note? Do I send it to someone else? I'm frightened and confused!I seriously feel like I'm a 75 year old lady in the early 1980s trying to wrap my head around the touch-tone phone.
My point is this: I'm doing my "25 Things about Me" list HERE, not on Facebook. Facebook is scary and overstimulating. This is for anyone who wants to read it.
- My parents were almost-20 and 20 when I was born. It blows my mind to think that when my mom was my age, she had a teenage daughter. Can you see me with a teenage daughter right now? (The proper response is, "No. You look way too young. I can't even imagine that!")
- I always wished I had some amazing musical talent like singing or playing piano. I have neither. When Maria asked to take guitar lessons, I thought about taking them with her. I decided I'm too old of a dog for that new trick.
- I'm left-handed, but cut, lead off cartwheels, and use the computer mouse more comfortably with my right hand. My right-handed handwriting is HILARIOUS.
- Whenever someone falls, my immediate reaction is to laugh. If objects are involved (tripping over something, falling onto a box, etc.), I laugh even harder. This is INVOLUNTARY! While 90% of falls are just more embarrassing for the person than anything else, sometimes people do get hurt. Then I feel REALLY bad.
- I love thunderstorms. I kind of don't like saying that because it sounds as cliche as saying, "When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a princess", or "I remember the smell of Granny's kitchen". It's true though. I pretty much get excited for any severe weather event. Last year was awesome (worst snow storm in the area's recorded history, a cah-razy line of severe thunderstorms that lasted for about nine hours, and a hurricane-without-the-rain windstorm that knocked out power for most of the state for several days). I hate drama with people, but LOVE weather drama.
- When something is really disturbing to me, my instinctive way of coping with it is to research it and study it inside and out. I think, for me, knowing it inside and out makes it less scary and more fascinating or something.
- I love the show "Intervention" and make a game of making accurate assessments about the people and their families before they say it on the show (kind of like playing Jeopardy and shouting out the "questions" before the contestants do). I'm actually really good at it and have excellent accuracy.
- I love hollandaise sauce.
- I love cooking and, whenever I do, ask myself why I don't do it more often. This happens about once a week.
- I have no bad memories (repressed or otherwise) from my childhood. Nothing bad happened to or around me (that I was aware of).
- When I little (maybe 4 or 5), my uncle (who was like 14 at the time) was sometimes "mean" to me (meaning, he didn't let me come down to hang out with him and his friends, or didn't let me play in his room when he was gone, etc., and LOVED to scare me with this awful Halloween mask he had). So one day, I threatened him with a butter knife. It made me so mad when he laughed it off because...well, because it's a butter knife! Wait! I know what you're thinking! That isn't a bad memory! It's just a memory. Get off my back!
- I have some OCD tendencies, mostly with numbers. I use the same number of drops of essential oil in the girls' baths, I count out stuff for their lunches and make sure they have equal numbers of things like blueberries, crackers, etc., I brush my teeth for the same number of seconds each time. Stuff like that. Having said that, if I'm in a hurry, lose count, or get distracted by something, it doesn't bother me and I don't have to start over.
- I'm a pretty calm person and try to find a reason to laugh in almost any situation. This sometimes gets me into trouble as people perceive it as being flippant or not taking something seriously.
- I am a Tetris master and I like playing the games on Webkinz.
- I love taking pictures and am ready to move on to a very lovely camera (once I have a thousand dollars of disposable cash).
- I've been to Vegas five times. We've stayed at Wynn the last three times and I'm hooked. It smells so pretty in there. We would like to go at least once a year.
- I want to go to India.
- I have considered, on more than on occasion, practicing Buddhism.
- My children are the in the toy room doing an acapella duet of Nirvana's "About a Girl".
- I feel like the people in my life are exactly the people that should be. In other words, they all fit so well. I still consider my girl's dad, and my ex-husband, one of my best friends. The relationship Mike and I have feels completely healthy, fulfilling, and functional, and I still have my best friend of 23 years. Carie, and the people I've worked with over the past few years, are invaluable friends to me and make me laugh all time and make my day-to-day life truly fun and meaningful.
- I have a very good memory and excellent sense of smell (does that make me like a dog?).
- I love music and my favorites generally rotate. Currently, the most frequently played on my iPod are N.E.R.D., Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Eagles, and Radiohead. I freaking LOVE Radiohead (OK Computer is seriously one of the best albums of all time).
- I really like watching my dad play guitar. He's the first person I observed as having a "guitar face". I now look for it on anyone playing. Look for it next time you are watching SNL or something. Everyone who plays makes one. I can't describe it, you'll just have to see it.
- I really like goat cheese.
- I LOVE shoes...mine, my children's...love them. This really isn't news to anyone who has ever seen my closets. I seem to rotate through the same few pair each season but I have a disgustingly large collection. (ooh, maybe it's part of the OCD and hoarding, hmmm...breakthrough!)
